Amid violent protests in Kenya against the government’s proposed tax hikes, India has advised its citizens in the East African nation to exercise utmost caution and restrict non-essential movement. The Indian consulate in Kenya issued an advisory urging Indians in the country to avoid areas affected by the protests and violence until the situation clears up. The advisory recommended following local news and the Mission’s website and social media handles for updates.
The situation escalated as at least five protestors were shot dead and over 150 others injured in Nairobi. Police resorted to using tear gas and live rounds after thousands stormed into Kenya’s Parliament and set part of it on fire. The unrest led to lawmakers fleeing and drew fire from the police, resulting in casualties.
President William Ruto called the events “treasonous” and vowed to quash the unrest at whatever cost, emphasizing a critical turning point in the country’s response to threats to national security. The military was deployed to support police, and clashes spread to other cities as protesters demanded legislators vote against a finance bill imposing new taxes.
The protests in Kenya have sparked concerns among the Indian community in the country, prompting the Indian consulate to issue the advisory for safety measures. As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for Indians in Kenya to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities and official channels for updates on the evolving scenario.
