Indian peacekeeper, Major Radhika Sen, is set to receive the prestigious ‘2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award’ in recognition of her outstanding service. Major Sen, who served with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) from March 2023 to April 2024, will be honored during a ceremony at the UN headquarters on May 30, 2024, marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
Born in Himachal Pradesh in 1993, Major Sen joined the Indian Army eight years ago, bringing with her a background in biotech engineering and a pursuit of a Master’s degree from IIT Bombay. Her deployment to MONUSCO as the Commander of the Engagement Platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion showcased her leadership and dedication to promoting gender equality and peacekeeping efforts.
During her tenure in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Major Sen actively engaged with conflict-affected communities, including women and girls, earning their trust through humility, compassion, and dedication. She led mixed-gender patrols and activities in a volatile environment, fostering a safe space for both men and women to operate together under her command.
Major Sen’s efforts extended beyond traditional peacekeeping duties, as she facilitated English classes for children and provided health, gender, and vocational training for displaced and marginalized adults. Her commitment to promoting women’s solidarity and empowering local communities earned her the recognition as a true leader and role model by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The ‘Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award’ was created in 2016 to recognize individuals who integrate a gender perspective into peacekeeping activities. Major Sen’s selection for this prestigious award highlights India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions, with the country currently being the 11th largest contributor of women military peacekeepers. Her exemplary service in promoting gender-sensitive peacekeeping serves as an inspiration and a testament to the importance of diversity and inclusion in peacekeeping efforts worldwide.
