Indian Railways is prioritizing safety measures with the review of the advanced version of the Automatic Train Protection System (ATP) Kavach 4.0 by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The review took place at the Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, highlighting the importance of enhanced railway safety. Kavach 3.2 version is currently being installed on approved high-density routes, with plans for installation on new routes to cover a wider railway network in a shorter period. During the review, it was revealed that the three manufacturers of Kavach are in the advanced stage of testing version 4.0, presenting their progress report to the Minister. Following the review, the Minister directed that the Kavach installation be carried out in a planned manner in mission mode once it is ready. The development of Kavach marks a significant milestone in railway safety, with the Indian Railways making steady progress in implementing advanced safety systems. The system requires five subsystems for functioning, including optical fibre networks, towers, radio equipment, RFID tags, and data centers at railway stations integrated with the signalling system. With the certification of Kavach version 4.0, the railways are set to scale up its installation in mission mode, emphasizing the meticulous testing and adherence to international standards for safety certification. The diverse network of the Indian Railways necessitates thorough safety systems to ensure the protection of passengers and efficient train operations.
