Iran’s 2024 Snap Presidential Elections: A Look at the Candidates and Implications

Iran is gearing up for its snap presidential election on June 28 following the unexpected death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The upcoming election, originally slated for 2025, will see a number of candidates vying for the top position. The registration process for presidential hopefuls began on Thursday, May 30, with candidates having five days to submit their applications.

Among the prominent figures expected to participate in the elections is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the populist politician known for his controversial remarks about Israel and conflict with Western nations over Iran’s nuclear program. Ahmadinejad, who previously served two consecutive terms as president from 2005 to 2013, has faced disqualification in previous elections but remains a notable contender.

Another key candidate is Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the current parliament speaker and a conservative figure, who has expressed his intentions to address pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and sanctions if elected. Ghalibaf’s political track record includes positions as the mayor of Tehran and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

Additionally, Saeed Jalili, a staunch hardliner and former chief nuclear negotiator, has announced his candidacy, aligning himself with ultraconservative principles. Jalili is known for his close ties to Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, a prominent figure in Iran’s hardline political landscape.

The Guardian Council, an unelected body tasked with vetting candidates for public office, will play a crucial role in determining the final list of approved contenders by June 11. The council’s decisions have historically shaped the outcome of presidential elections in Iran, as seen in the limited candidate participation and low voter turnout in previous polls.

As Iran prepares for the upcoming election amidst diplomatic tensions and regional conflicts, the political landscape is poised for significant shifts. The role of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in endorsing candidates and guiding the electoral process will be pivotal in shaping the country’s future direction.
