In a recent development, Italian police have successfully freed 33 Indian farm labourers from slave-like working conditions in the northern Verona Province. Authorities also seized almost €500,000 from their two alleged abusers, highlighting the issue of labour exploitation in the region.
The Indian workers, who were brought to Italy by alleged gang-masters from India on seasonal work permits, were subjected to inhumane treatment. They were asked to pay exorbitant amounts ranging from €17,000 to €30,000 each, promising them a better future in return. The migrants were employed in farm jobs, working long hours – seven days a week and 10-12 hours a day – for just a meager pay of €4 per hour, which was entirely withheld to settle their debts.
Moreover, some workers were forced to continue working for free to pay for a permanent work permit that would never be granted to them. The police have aptly described their treatment as ‘slavery’ due to the exploitative nature of the labor conditions.
Following the intervention of the authorities, the alleged abusers have been charged with crimes connected to slavery and labour exploitation. The rescued workers are now being offered protection, work opportunities, and legal residency papers to ensure their well-being and safety.
This incident sheds light on the issue of migrant labor exploitation in Italy, where there is a growing demand for foreign workers in lower-paid jobs. The country has been facing cases of labor law violations, with a significant percentage of workers, especially in the agricultural sector, employed illegally.
The tragic death of an Indian fruit picker in a machinery accident further emphasizes the need for stringent actions against such exploitative practices. The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, condemned the acts as inhumane and called for strict punishments for those responsible.
As authorities continue to crack down on unlawful labor practices, it is crucial to ensure the protection and rights of migrant workers in Italy. The joint efforts of India and Italy in signing the Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement reflect a commitment to addressing such issues and safeguarding the welfare of foreign workers in the country.
