K P Sharma Oli, aged 72, has been appointed as Nepal’s Prime Minister for the third time on July 14, 2024, to lead the new coalition government amidst political instability in the country. Oli succeeds Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, who lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, triggering the formation of a new government as per the Constitution. This marks Oli’s return to power after serving as Prime Minister twice before. Oli’s appointment comes following the backing of NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba and the submission of signatures from 165 House of Representatives members. The new Cabinet, alongside Oli, is scheduled to be sworn in on July 15. With a track record of previous terms from 2015 to 2016 and then 2018 to 2021, Oli faces the arduous task of providing political stability in Nepal amidst ongoing challenges and transitioning political alliances.
