As Narendra Modi gears up for a third consecutive term as India’s Prime Minister, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies, including TDP and JD(U), are playing a pivotal role in government formation. With the BJP falling short of an absolute majority, the support of key allies like N. Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), and other parties is crucial for the NDA government. Naidu and Kumar have emerged as kingmakers in this election, demanding significant roles at the Centre for their support.
The BJP-led NDA held a crucial meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence to discuss government formation after the 2024 Lok Sabha election results were announced. The NDA secured 293 seats out of 543, with the BJP winning 240 seats. The allies’ demands are centered around important ministerial posts and portfolios in the upcoming government.
JD(U) is reportedly eyeing the Lok Sabha Speaker post and key ministries for its MPs. Nitish Kumar’s party is keen on portfolios such as railways, rural development, and water resources to bring infrastructure projects to Bihar. Additionally, they are pushing for special status for Bihar, early assembly polls, and a national caste census. On the other hand, TDP is seeking the Speaker’s post, financial assistance for projects in Andhra Pradesh, and important portfolios in the Centre.
However, the BJP is reluctant to concede key ministries like Home Affairs, Defence, Finance, and External Affairs to allies. They are keen on retaining critical portfolios related to infrastructure and welfare. The party is also focusing on fulfilling its promises to various segments of society, including the poor, women, youth, and farmers.
The government formation is on a tight deadline, with plans for Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony this weekend. The bargaining between BJP and its allies is underway, as each party strives to secure favorable positions in the upcoming government.
