In the realm of mobile photography, Leica Camera AG has recently unveiled a new iPhone camera app called Leica LUX. The app boasts a Leica-inspired user interface, unique Leica Looks, and meticulously crafted simulations of legendary Leica lenses. With the aim of bringing the distinctive Leica experience to a broader audience, Leica LUX is set to cater to the large number of iPhone users who also happen to be Leica camera owners. The app offers faithful recreations of iconic Leica lenses, including options like the Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH, Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, and Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH. Additionally, an APO-Telyt-M 135mm f/3.4 emulation is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) models. Leica has emphasized that more lenses will be added to the app in the future.\n\nThe proprietary image processing engine powering Leica LUX is grounded in machine learning and computer-aided photography, enabling the app to reproduce the distinctive look associated with Leica lenses, including the characteristic bokeh effect. Alongside the lens simulations, the app features Leica Looks, a collection of presets that mimic various color gradations and film styles found in dedicated Leica cameras such as Leica Standard, Leica Classic, Leica Contemporary, and Leica Black and White. Even the Standard Look offers a different aesthetic compared to the native iPhone camera app, with unique color tones and contrast.\n\nWhile designed with Leica enthusiasts in mind, Leica LUX also caters to beginners by providing a powerful yet user-friendly automatic mode. Users have the flexibility to adjust focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure compensation. The app includes additional features like a grid, level, timer, and control over file formats, including RAW, JPEG, and HEIF. After capturing an image, users can save the full-resolution file to their Photos library or export it with a special Leica frame, complete with essential shooting information.\n\nLeica LUX is available for free download, but to unlock the app’s full range of features, including access to all Leica Looks and simulated lenses, users can opt for a paid upgrade priced at $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually. The app is compatible with iPhone devices running iOS 17, with Leica recommending the use of iPhone 12 Pro or newer for optimal performance. PetaPixel is currently testing Leica LUX and will provide a detailed hands-on report soon, offering further insights into the app’s capabilities and performance.
