IMD Issues Orange Alert for Maharashtra As Matheran Records Highest Rainfall in India: Detailed Weather Forecast Inside
Matheran, with 22 cm of rain, recorded the highest rainfall in India over the past 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued an orange alert for parts of central Maharashtra on July 7 and 8, anticipating very heavy rainfall over the next five days. A red alert has also been issued for Uttarakhand on July 7.
Heavy rain continues to impact Mumbai’s neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, leading to flooding in areas such as Shahpur, Palghar, and Panvel. An orange alert indicates preparedness, while a red alert calls for immediate action. The IMD defines heavy rain as 64.5-115.5 mm, very heavy rain as 115.6-204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rain as above 204.4 mm.
The IMD forecast suggests isolated heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra from July 9-11, with similar conditions expected in Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam on July 7; the Gujarat region on July 7 and 9; Kerala and Mahe on July 7 and 8; Telangana on July 8 and 9; Coastal Karnataka on July 9; North Interior Karnataka on July 7 and 10; and South Interior Karnataka on July 8 and 10.
Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over South Interior Karnataka on July 7; the Ghat areas of central Maharashtra on July 7 and 8; Konkan and Goa on July 8; Coastal Karnataka on July 7, 8, 10, and 11. Extremely heavy rainfall is also expected in Konkan and Goa on July 7.
In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall was reported across several parts of Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa, particularly in Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts. Raigad’s Matheran recorded 22 cm of rain, Ratnagiri 15 cm, Rajapur 13 cm, Panvel 12 cm, Ponda 12 cm, Karjat 11 cm, Murbad 11 cm, Lanja 11 cm, Khalapur 11 cm, Mandangad 11 cm, Sangameshwar Devrukh 10 cm, Awalegaon 9 cm, Shahapur 9 cm, and Roha 8 cm.
In central Maharashtra, Kolhapur’s Gaganbawada received 18 cm of rain, Pune’s Lonavala 13 cm, Kolhapur’s Chandgad 9 cm, Jalgaon’s Yaval 9 cm, Nashik’s Ozharkheda 7 cm, and Nashik’s Peth 7 cm. High wind speeds were also recorded in Raigad (65 kmph), Pune (33 kmph), and Satara (57 kmph) over the past 24 hours.
The IMD has updated the rainfall alert from yellow to orange for at least six districts, including Pune, for the next five days. Three districts from the Konkan region and two from south Maharashtra have also received an orange alert for heavy rainfall.
