West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will not be attending the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting on June 1 in Delhi. In a recent election rally in Kolkata, Banerjee explained that she will be preoccupied with the state elections and ongoing relief efforts following Cyclone Remal. She emphasized the importance of focusing on providing relief to the affected people, stating, “My priority is ensuring relief for the people. I am doing a meeting here, but my heart lies with the affected people.” Banerjee highlighted that voting will take place on nine seats in West Bengal on June 1, including crucial constituencies in Kolkata. She, along with her nephew Abhishek, will be voting in this phase.

The decision to skip the INDIA bloc meeting comes at a crucial time as the meeting has been called to review and discuss the coalition’s future course of action, just 4 days before the election results are announced. Banerjee had previously expressed her willingness to offer outside support to the INDIA bloc after the election results are declared. However, she made it clear that due to the state’s electoral commitments and the priority of cyclone relief work, she will not be able to attend the meeting in the national capital.

Banerjee’s absence from the meeting is significant in the backdrop of her party’s stance on supporting the opposition alliance. While the TMC opted out of seat-sharing discussions in West Bengal, Banerjee asserted her commitment to the anti-BJP alliance at the national level. The INDIA bloc will be focusing on strategizing ahead of the election results and evaluating their performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The meeting is expected to be crucial in determining the coalition’s future course of action in the political landscape of the country.
