Microsoft has announced significant changes to the Recall feature on its upcoming Copilot+ PCs in response to security and privacy concerns raised by experts. The Recall feature, an exclusive AI-driven search tool, will now have improved safeguards to protect user data and enhance privacy. Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, detailed the modifications in a recent blog post. The changes include making Recall an opt-in feature by default, requiring Windows Hello authentication for access, and implementing additional data protection measures. Recall allows users to search for past activities on their PCs and is part of the advanced features in the Copilot+ PCs unveiled at the Build event in May. Privacy and security experts had criticized Recall for capturing screenshots of user activities and potentially exposing sensitive information. The updated Recall will now incorporate layers of data protection, including encryption of screenshots and database, with decryption requiring Windows Hello authentication. By addressing these security concerns, Microsoft aims to provide a safer and more secure user experience with the launch of Copilot+ PCs on June 18. The company reaffirmed its commitment to privacy and security by ensuring that all data processed by Recall is stored locally, can be managed by users, and is not shared with Microsoft. As Microsoft continues to innovate in AI and PC technology, the development of Recall reflects the company’s dedication to empowering users while upholding robust data protection standards.
