In a strategic move to counter the Opposition’s ‘Save the Constitution’ narrative that had impacted the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections, the Union government is gearing up for an extensive campaign to celebrate 75 years of the Constitution, according to The Indian Express. Starting next year on June 25, designated as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ in remembrance of the Emergency declared in 1975, the government aims to raise awareness about the Constitution’s significance and the steps taken to reinforce it. The Ministry of Culture will spearhead this campaign, building on the success of the ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign in 2022-23 marking 75 years of Independence.
Plans for the celebration include exhibitions and events across India to engage the youth and highlight PM Narendra Modi’s contributions to India’s constitutional legacy. Videos of his speeches on the subject are expected to be showcased. The campaign, although initiated on November 26, 1949, when the Constitution was adopted, might kickstart on August 15 and conclude on January 26, coinciding with Republic Day. This move is not just a celebration but also a response to allegations against the BJP during the elections regarding changes to the Constitution.
While ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will honor those who suffered during the Emergency, the 75 years of Constitution celebration aims to spread awareness about its importance and the individuals behind its drafting. This positive campaign seeks to educate the public on the Constitution’s significance and role in the nation’s development. Prime Minister Modi’s focus on India’s constitutional legacy will be a key feature of the events, aiming to engage citizens and emphasize the country’s commitment to upholding democratic values.
