Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia witnessed the gathering of over 1.83 million Muslims on June 15, 2024, as they converged for a day of worship and reflection during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The hill of mercy, Mount Arafat, holds significant importance for pilgrims, who stand together seeking mercy, blessings, prosperity, and good health. It is believed to be the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage, a time when emotions run high and prayers are fervent.

The pilgrimage to Mount Arafat began as thousands of pilgrims made their way through the darkness of the predawn hours, walking towards the sacred hill. Tears streamed down many faces as they reached the rocky slopes of Mount Arafat, raising their hands in worship. Pilgrims expressed profound gratitude for the spiritual energy and strength they felt at the site.

Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon, known as the Farewell Sermon, at Mount Arafat over a millennium ago, emphasizing equality and unity among Muslims. This year, the pilgrimage took place amidst the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which added a somber note to the proceedings. Palestinian pilgrims from Gaza were unable to attend due to the closure of the Rafah crossing back in May.

As the sweltering heat became a concern, measures were in place to ensure the well-being of the pilgrims. Temperatures soared, prompting health officials to advise pilgrims to stay hydrated and seek shade. Cooling stations with water spray were set up to provide relief from the intense heat. Despite the challenging conditions, the spirit of the pilgrims remained unwavering as they fulfilled the rites of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Upon the conclusion of the Hajj, pilgrims embarked on the symbolic stoning of the devil in Mina, followed by the festive Eid al-Adha celebration. Men shaved their heads, and women snipped a lock of hair as a sign of renewal before departing for the city of Medina. The Hajj pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings globally, serves as a testament to faith and unity among Muslims from diverse backgrounds.
