As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gears up to start its third term, Chirag Paswan, the president of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), shared his insights and expectations with The Hindu regarding the recent election results, coalition dynamics, and more. The LJP (RV) had a perfect record in the elections, winning all the seats it contested. However, the BJP, their ally, fell short of their 370-plus target. When questioned about the reasons behind this shortfall, Paswan reflected on the challenges of returning to power for a third consecutive term, emphasizing that self-imposed high goals can lead to scrutiny and questioning. Despite the missed target, Paswan expressed confidence in achieving the 400-seat milestone by the 2029 elections.
During a meeting of NDA allies, Prime Minister Modi shared his openness to all suggestions and discussions, providing a platform for dialogue and collaboration. Paswan highlighted the Prime Minister’s humility, accessibility, and willingness to consider diverse viewpoints. When asked about the Opposition’s views attributing the outcome to a mandate against Mr. Modi and his governance style, Paswan dismissed the claims of arrogance, stating that those who have interacted with the PM recognize his humble nature and receptiveness.
With the BJP falling short of a majority, concerns arise about the role of allies in the NDA. Paswan reiterated that allies have always had a voice within the coalition, citing previous instances where NDA accommodated their demands, such as the restoration of the SC/ST Act in 2018. The discussion then shifted to the topic of reservation, with Paswan dismissing the opposition’s narrative of reservation being in danger, emphasizing the constitutional strength and longevity of reservation policies. Reflecting on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Paswan stressed the need for consensus and inclusivity, emphasizing India’s cultural diversity and the importance of addressing varied apprehensions within the alliance. Finally, on the concept of a convenor structure akin to the Vajpayee Model of NDA, Paswan expressed confidence in the party’s coordination and settlement process moving forward.
