Amid escalating tensions in the international arena, NATO leaders have accused China of playing a significant role in helping Moscow’s assault on Ukraine. The joint declaration from NATO’s summit in Washington highlighted China’s deepening ties with Russia as a cause of ‘deep concern,’ labeling Beijing as a ‘decisive enabler’ of the ongoing conflict. NATO leaders emphasized that China’s ‘no limits’ partnership and substantial support for Russia’s defense industry have been instrumental in enabling Russia’s war efforts against Ukraine.

The alliance called on China to cease all material and political support to Russia’s war effort, including the transfer of dual-use goods such as weapons components and raw materials that contribute to Russia’s defense sector. NATO leaders stressed the negative implications for China’s interests and reputation by enabling the largest war in Europe in recent history.

The statement from NATO came ahead of the involvement of Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea in the summit, signaling a broader international concern over China’s role in the conflict. While Beijing has vehemently denied the accusations from NATO, the US-led alliance has been actively pushing for increased attention to the threats posed by China.

NATO’s outgoing Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, highlighted the alliance’s strong, clear message defining China’s responsibility in enabling Russia’s war. The declaration marks a significant shift in NATO’s stance towards China, reflecting growing global apprehension about Beijing’s involvement in supporting Russia’s military actions. As tensions continue to rise on the international stage, the role of China in enabling Russia’s war efforts remains a critical point of contention.
