The National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma has raised concerns over a derogatory comment made about Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh, suggesting that the individual responsible may be from Pakistan. The NCW took immediate action upon noticing the inappropriate remark on social media and filed a complaint with the Delhi Police. An FIR has been registered under charges of insulting a woman’s modesty and posting obscene content online. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma stated, “It was a very distasteful comment that caught our attention on social media, prompting us to take suo motu cognizance of the matter. The police have initiated an investigation into this incident, and it is likely that the individual behind the comment is residing in Pakistan.” Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously honored with the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, for his heroic actions during a fire at an army camp in Siachen Glacier. His widow, Smriti Singh, along with her mother-in-law, received the award from President Droupadi Murmu on July 5. The incident sparked outrage on social media after an insensitive comment was posted on a photo of Smriti Singh receiving the accolade. Delhi Police, with the assistance of their Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit, have registered an FIR and are actively seeking information regarding the individual responsible for the derogatory comment. The NCW has emphasized the importance of a prompt investigation and has requested a detailed report on the actions taken within three days. Chairperson Rekha Sharma further expressed the severity of such comments and highlighted the commission’s commitment to reporting similar cases to the authorities for necessary legal action. The broader social media community has echoed the sentiments of displeasure at the disparaging remark and demanded stringent measures against individuals engaging in such behavior. As the investigation progresses, the NCW remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice and accountability for inappropriate online conduct.
