The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted a retest of the NEET-UG examination for 1,563 candidates at six centres in four states and a Union Territory on Sunday. Out of the 1,563 candidates, 813 appeared for the retest, while 750 candidates chose to skip the exam. The retest was organized after the NTA withdrew the grace marks awarded to students due to a delay in the start of the examination at six centres in Meghalaya, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Chandigarh.
The exam was held at two centres in Haryana for 494 candidates, with 287 students appearing for the exam. In Chhattisgarh, 602 candidates were eligible for the retest, out of which 291 showed up for the exam. Similarly, in Meghalaya, 234 out of 464 eligible candidates took the test. One candidate in Gujarat also underwent the retest.
The NTA established a committee to cancel the scorecards of the 1,563 candidates and offered them the option of a retest to remedy the situation. The re-examination was scheduled for June 23, with the results set to be announced before June 30.
The NEET-UG 2024 examination, conducted in 4,750 centres across 571 cities, resulted in over 24 lakh candidates appearing for the test. The controversy surrounding the NEET-UG results has led to protests, demands for a CBI investigation, and concerns about the allocation of grace marks. The Union Education Minister dismissed reports of paper leaks and showed support for the credibility of the NTA.
Various political parties, including the DMK and Shiv Sena, have called for a review of the NEET examination process, urging the government to address the concerns raised by students. The Supreme Court has issued notices to parties involved in pleas related to NEET-UG irregularities and decision on grace marks, with a hearing scheduled for July 8.
As the NEET UG controversy continues to escalate, students and stakeholders await further updates on the retest process and the outcome for the affected candidates.
