In a recent development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken decisive action against alleged election interference in Odisha. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha reported instances of undue influence by senior officials, leading to significant repercussions. DS Kutey, IPS (RR: 1997), Special Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Office, and Ashish Kumar Singh, IPS (RR: 2010), IG (CM Security), were identified for their involvement in influencing election-related officers.
To uphold the integrity of the electoral process, the ECI directed the continuation of the investigation against Prasanta Jagadev, a BJP MLA candidate, for damaging an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) through due legal procedures. As a consequence of the findings, DS Kutey was suspended under relevant service regulations for his role in election interference. Kutey has been instructed to report to the Office of Resident Commissioner, Odisha, New Delhi, by 3:00 PM on May 29, 2024.
Furthermore, Ashish Kumar Singh, currently on medical leave since May 4, 2024, has been mandated to undergo a detailed medical examination by a special medical board formed by the Director of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, by May 30, 2024. The ECI seeks the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha to oversee the constitution of the medical board and submit their report by May 31, 2024.
These actions by the Election Commission underscore its dedication to upholding the sanctity of the electoral process, ensuring elections are conducted free from any undue influence. The suspension of DS Kutey and the medical evaluation of Ashish Kumar Singh mark crucial steps in maintaining transparency and fairness in the electoral activities in Odisha.
