In a recent exclusive interview with Mint, Peter Dohyung Lee, head of product strategy at Chinese smartphone maker OPPO, shared the company’s vision of integrating generative AI into mainstream consumer devices. Lee highlighted that OPPO aims to make AI phones accessible to everyone, starting with a target of 50 million devices by the end of the year. The company plans to embed GenAI features in all its phones, with over 100 functionalities set to be released this year alone.
Lee emphasized the significance of the Indian market for OPPO, noting the country’s billion-plus mobile phone users and the growing penetration of smartphones in smaller towns and villages. India’s young population is a driving force behind rapid AI adoption, especially through smartphones.
Moreover, OPPO’s Reno12 Series includes features like AI Recording Summary, which records meetings in English and Hindi and generates notes with a single touch. The company is also looking to expand this feature to support more Indian languages.
In line with its focus on AI, OPPO is prioritizing privacy, security, and data encryption technologies to ensure a safe and secure user experience. Additionally, the company is committed to enhancing hardware and software to keep pace with rapid AI integration.
Looking ahead, OPPO India plans to launch new products and introduce AI features, updates, and refinements across various price segments. Lee expressed OPPO’s openness to partnering with local AI creators and startups in the Indian market, signaling potential collaborations in the near future.
