Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a fervent speech addressing the Manipur issue in the parliament in response to the Opposition’s allegations that he had abandoned the violence-hit state. Modi slammed the Opposition for politicising the sensitive issue and assured that the Centre is dedicated to restoring peace in Manipur. He highlighted that violence has been decreasing and schools have reopened in most parts of the state. In a scathing attack on the Congress, PM Modi pointed out that Manipur had been under President’s rule 10 times in the past, calling out those who were now raising the issue. He warned that one day Manipur will reject those who are trying to politicize the situation. Referring to the deep-rooted history of social conflict in Manipur, PM Modi emphasized the efforts of the central and state governments to engage with all stakeholders to bring peace to the state. He also mentioned that Home Minister Amit Shah had spent considerable time in Manipur. The Prime Minister’s speech came in the wake of disruptions and protests by Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha during his address. The protests were triggered by the abrupt interruption of an MP from Manipur during a speech. The Congress’s Inner Manipur MP had expressed disappointment over the absence of any mention of the ethnic violence-hit state in President Droupadi Murmu’s address. The ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei community and Kukis has resulted in over 220 deaths and displacement of nearly 50,000 people. While the Meiteis seek inclusion under the Scheduled Tribes category, the Kuki tribes demand a separate administrative unit in Manipur. PM Modi’s resolute defense and assurance of action on the Manipur issue signal the government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the state amidst the ongoing social conflict and violence.
