Amid chants of Bharat Jodo and a copy of the Indian Constitution in his hand, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took the oath as a member of the Lok Sabha this afternoon. Mr Gandhi has been elected from two seats — Wayanad and Raebareli. He has vacated the Wayanad seat that will now be contested by his sister and Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Rahul Gandhi’s oath ceremony echoed the unity and commitment towards the Indian Constitution demonstrated by opposition leaders in Parliament. The display of the Constitution booklet has gained significance as an act of solidarity and protection of democratic values.
During his oath-taking, Mr Gandhi proclaimed, “I, Rahul Gandhi, having been elected a member of the House of People, do solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India, and faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter. Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan,” showcasing his dedication to the foundational principles of the nation.
The symbolism of holding the Constitution during oath ceremonies has spread throughout the opposition as a stance against any perceived threats to the core values of India. This public display of unity serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the democratic ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
In response to the opposition’s emphasis on the Constitution, the ruling BJP has initiated a counter-narrative underscoring historical events that challenged democratic norms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top ministers highlighted past instances where the Congress Party allegedly compromised basic freedoms and constitutional integrity.
The political discourse surrounding the Indian Constitution reflects a broader ideological clash between the opposition and the ruling party. As the nation witnesses these symbolic gestures and historical reflections, the commitment to constitutional values remains at the forefront of political discussions.
