Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, as confirmed by the Congress on June 25. This decision came after a meeting of the floor leaders of the INDIA group at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence. Mr. Gandhi, who took oath as an MP for the fifth consecutive term, will now lead the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
The 18th Lok Sabha is set to witness a rare contest for the Speaker’s post between the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Om Birla and Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress after the NDA government and the INDIA group of Opposition parties failed to reach a consensus.
On the second day of oath-taking in the 18th Lok Sabha, more Opposition MPs swore by the Constitution. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, flaunting a red pocket Constitution, joined other prominent MPs like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress’ Mahua Moitra, and former Speaker Om Birla, who is in line for a second term in office.
In other news, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is planning to seek custody of all 18 accused in the NEET paper leak case for interrogation. Currently, all the accused, 13 from Patna and five from Jharkhand, are in judicial custody after being arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOU).
As the Ministry of Home Affairs gears up for the rollout of new criminal laws, the eSakhsya App is being tested to aid police in recording crime scenes, searches, and seizures in criminal cases. Each recording can be up to four minutes long, with multiple files uploadable for each FIR.
Meanwhile, security measures for the upcoming Amarnath yatra in Kashmir have been heightened amidst a surge in militant violence in Jammu this year. The security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir are implementing multiple security measures to maintain vigilance and secure highways for the yatra.
