Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, is making preparations to visit Hathras in Uttar Pradesh where a horrific stampede at a religious gathering led to the tragic loss of 123 lives. The incident occurred during a ‘satsang’ organized by religious preacher Narayan Sakar Hari, also known as ‘Bhole Baba’, which attracted about 2.5 lakh people from various parts of UP and other states. The stampede broke out when followers rushed to collect dust stirred up by the departing godman’s car, resulting in chaos and multiple fatalities. ‘Bhole Baba’ is currently missing and a Special Investigation Team, along with a judicial panel headed by a retired High Court judge, has been set up to probe the tragic occurrence.
Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences for the victims on social media, urging the government and administration to provide the best treatment to the injured and support to the bereaved families. KC Venugopal, Congress General Secretary (Organisation), confirmed Gandhi’s intent to visit Hathras to interact with the affected individuals. The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a judicial probe into the incident, lodging an FIR against the organizers for flouting regulations and evidence tampering.
The stampede has reignited discussions on safety and crowd management in religious events in India, shedding light on the potential risks associated with large gatherings. As Rahul Gandhi prepares to visit the site of the tragedy, the nation mourns the lives lost and hopes for thorough investigations and an adequate response to prevent such incidents in the future.
