Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to embark on a visit to the displaced residents of Manipur staying in Assam’s Cachar district before making his way to the violence-hit northeastern state. Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah revealed that Gandhi will be arriving at Silchar airport in Assam and proceeding to meet the displaced people before heading to Manipur’s Jiribam.
With over 1,700 residents of Manipur seeking shelter in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district following recent violence in their homeland, Gandhi’s visit is aimed at understanding the situation more intensely. The Assam police have bolstered security measures post their arrival, emphasizing the need to abide by the laws of Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the local administration to extend humanitarian support to the displaced individuals while maintaining law and order. Rahul Gandhi’s visit is deemed crucial by Assam Congress president Borah, who highlighted the ongoing ignorance of Manipur by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The visit is significant in light of the ethnic conflict that has plagued Manipur since last year, with Gandhi making efforts to bring peace to the region. Gandhi is scheduled to stay in Imphal for a day before returning to Delhi on July 9. This marks his third visit to Manipur amidst the persistent ethnic tensions and violence in the region.
