In the aftermath of a devastating landslide in Nepal, search and rescue efforts have been intensified to locate survivors and recover bodies after two buses were swept into a river. The incident, which occurred in Chitwan district, left more than 50 people missing as the raging river, swollen by heavy rains, made search operations challenging.
Authorities reported that the chances of finding survivors were slim, given the time that had passed since the buses were swept away. Despite the receding water levels, murky conditions continued to hamper rescue operations, with rescuers facing difficulties in locating the submerged buses.
The Nepali Army, along with other rescue teams, has been deployed to the site to aid in the search efforts. With the improved weather conditions, rescuers were able to cover more ground and use heavy equipment to clear landslides from the highway, enabling easier access to the area where the buses were last seen.
As the search continues, the recovery of the first body from the wreckage marks a somber turn in the operation. The body of a man was found 50 kilometers from the accident site, emphasizing the severity of the incident. Medical teams are also treating three individuals who were ejected from the buses and sustained injuries.
The monsoon season in Nepal poses significant risks of landslides and floods, with the mountainous terrain amplifying the impact of heavy rains. In response to the disaster, the government has imposed a ban on night travel for buses in areas with poor weather forecasting facilities, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The resilience and determination of the rescue teams underline the importance of swift and efficient response in the face of natural disasters. As efforts continue to locate the missing passengers and provide support to the affected individuals, the unity and solidarity shown by the community serve as a beacon of hope in the wake of tragedy.
