A Serbian police officer guarding the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade was injured after an unidentified attacker shot a bolt with a crossbow at him. The incident occurred near the embassy in Serbia, where the officer used a weapon in self-defense to shoot the attacker. The assailant, who has not been identified, approached the officer multiple times while asking for the location of a museum. Eventually, the attacker took out a crossbow from a bag and fired at the guard. The officer retaliated by shooting back at the assailant, resulting in the attacker’s death. The officer was conscious when taken to the main emergency hospital in the capital, Belgrade, where he underwent surgery to remove the bolt from his neck. According to Serbian news agency Tanjug, the officer’s condition is currently stable. The interior minister, Ivica Dacic, described the incident as a terrorist attack against Serbia. Several individuals, believed to be linked to the attack, have been arrested in connection to the incident. There are suspicions of a motive related to terrorism, considering the nature of the attack on a gendarme outside the Israeli embassy. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident as an attempted terrorist attack near the embassy, which remains closed. The embassy’s security has been heightened, including security alerts for foreign embassies, government buildings, and public places in Belgrade. Serbia has been maintaining close relations with Israel, and investigations are ongoing to uncover any possible ties of the attacker with foreign terrorist groups.
