In a recent appeal, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge urged the country’s bureaucrats to serve the nation without fear as they play a vital role in the counting of votes. This plea comes following allegations by senior party leader Jairam Ramesh, claiming that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had attempted to intimidate 150 district officers ahead of the vote counting day.
Kharge emphasized the importance of bureaucrats upholding the Constitution and not bowing down to any unconstitutional methods. In an open letter posted on social media, he urged civil servants to discharge their duties based on merit on the upcoming counting day.
Citing the oath taken by civil servants to faithfully and conscientiously carry out their duties in accordance with the Constitution and the law, Kharge stressed the paramount importance of the independence of institutions. He called for every bureaucrat, regardless of rank, to fulfill their responsibilities free from any form of coercion or intimidation from political parties.
The appeal from Kharge also warned against the threats faced by democratic institutions, pointing out a systemic pattern in the last decade of undermining autonomous bodies by the ruling party. He highlighted the need for institutions to maintain their independence and not succumb to political pressures.
The plea to civil servants comes amidst concerns raised by the Opposition regarding the conduct of the upcoming election results. With exit polls predicting a BJP victory, the opposition parties are gearing up for the outcome of the elections. This appeal serves as a reminder for bureaucrats to uphold their duties with integrity and without fear, ensuring the smooth functioning of the democratic process in the country.
