China’s Shenzhou-18 crew, consisting of taikonauts Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu, is gearing up for their first extravehicular activity (EVA) in the Tiangong Space Station. The crew has undergone extensive preparation for this momentous spacewalk, as announced by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) on May 27, 2024.

The crewmembers have been in orbit for the past 32 days, conducting a variety of scientific experiments since their arrival at the space station on April 26. Their upcoming EVA marks a significant milestone in China’s ambitious space exploration endeavors.

The CMSA has not disclosed which two taikonauts will be selected to carry out the EVA. However, a video released by the agency showcases the crew meticulously checking their spacesuits, inspecting tools and equipment, training on the operation of robotic arms, and conducting simulations inside the cabin.

Additionally, the Shenzhou-18 crew has participated in system-wide pressure emergency drills, medical rescue exercises, and other crucial in-orbit training programs to ensure the success and safety of their upcoming spacewalk.

The astronauts have also been actively engaged in space science experiments, including the installation of material exposure experiment apparatus outside the space module, further advancing China’s capabilities in space research and technology.

As the crew prepares for this historic EVA, the CMSA has affirmed that they are in good health, and the operations within the space station are running smoothly, providing ideal conditions for the execution of the extravehicular activity. The successful completion of the spacewalk will undoubtedly pave the way for further exploration and advancements in China’s space programs.
