In a significant move, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe reiterated the country’s unwavering support for the establishment of a separate Palestinian state within the next five years. Speaking at a special service held at a Grand Jummah Mosque in the Muslim-dominated Kattankudy in the eastern province, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the need for action to set up an independent Palestine state and to stop the violence that has claimed countless lives.
This reiterated commitment comes in the wake of the Hamas militants’ attack on Israel last year, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people and took hostages. Subsequently, Israel has continued to bombard the Gaza Strip, resulting in the tragic loss of over 37,000 Palestinian lives. President Wickremesinghe firmly stated that Sri Lanka’s position on the Gaza clashes remains steadfast, and there is an urgent need to address the longstanding issue by establishing an independent Palestinian state.
The President also highlighted the importance of collaboration and collective efforts in finding a viable solution to the Palestine problem, emphasizing that it is essential to take concrete steps towards establishing the state of Palestine within the next five years. He stressed that it is time to move beyond discussions that have spanned decades and focus on actionable measures to address Israel’s security concerns separately.
Despite Sri Lanka’s current economic challenges, President Wickremesinghe announced the establishment of the Gaza Children’s Fund, aimed at supporting the children affected by the conflict. The government donated a million dollars, and the public responded generously, demonstrating solidarity with the cause. This initiative underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and support for peace in the region.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s advocacy for an independent Palestinian state and the establishment of the Gaza Children’s Fund reflect the country’s commitment to peace and stability in the region. The call to action to address the long-standing Palestine issue and put an end to civilian casualties underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for concerted efforts to achieve a lasting solution.
