A state of emergency was declared on July 7 in parts of Russia’s Voronezh region near the border with Ukraine following a suspected Ukrainian drone attack that set an ammunition depot on fire. Regional Governor Aleksandr Gusev announced that Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air-defense systems, leading to the ignition of a fire at the ammunition depot in the Podgornensky district overnight. Videos surfaced on Telegram showing the drones heading towards the depot followed by a series of explosions and plumes of black smoke rising into the air. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties reported in the incident.
In response to the incident, authorities have closed the road leading to the area and begun evacuating residents to temporary accommodation centers. This incident comes amidst ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with both countries engaging in military actions against each other. Ukraine has targeted industrial facilities inside Russia, focusing on oil refining capabilities that work for the military. Russian forces have retaliated with attacks on Ukrainian territories as well, intensifying the conflict.
As the situation escalates, both countries are reporting incidents of missile and drone attacks on each other’s regions. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its Iskander missiles had destroyed Ukrainian launchers for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems and a Giraffe radar station in the Odesa region. Ukrainian Air Force commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk dismissed the claims, stating that Russian forces had targeted decoy launchers to misdirect their missile attacks. This back-and-forth conflict highlights the rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides engaging in military actions amidst the ongoing crisis.
