A stunning image of a quasar, also known as a ‘jeweled ring’, has been captured by the James Webb Telescope MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), showcasing a fascinating cosmic phenomenon through gravitational lensing. The quasar, named RX J1131-1231, is situated approximately 6 billion light years away from Earth. Gravitational lensing, a concept predicted by Einstein, occurs when the light from a distant source is bent and amplified by a massive object’s gravitational field, such as a galaxy, positioned between the source and the observer. In this case, the nearby galaxy has wrapped the light of the quasar, resulting in the creation of a visually striking arc that forms the appearance of a jeweled ring. The quasar, fueled by supermassive black holes, dust, and gas, emits intense brightness. The image showcases the galaxy responsible for the gravitational lensing, depicted as a blue dot in the middle with three dots above it, making it one of the best-lensed quasars known to date. This extraordinary phenomenon of gravitational lensing allows astronomers to gain insights into the distances of celestial objects in interstellar space, aiding in deepening the understanding of cosmic structures. Furthermore, the study of RX J1131-1231 offers valuable information about the nature, growth, and evolution of black holes. Observations suggest that this particular quasar has primarily grown through mergers with other black holes, rather than accreting material from various sources. By analyzing the characteristics and behaviors of these massive cosmic entities, scientists can unravel the mysteries surrounding black holes and the extreme conditions that surround them. With advancements in technology and the capabilities of telescopes like the James Webb Telescope, researchers are poised to delve deeper into the complexities of the universe and unlock more mysteries hidden in the vastness of space.
