On July 10, 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice B R Gavai, has recommended the appointment of 7 Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court as Permanent Judges. The Collegium also recommended two other Additional Judges for a fresh term of one year, effective from October 07. The names recommended for permanent appointments as Judges of the Bombay High Court include: Shri Justice Yanshivraj Gopichand Khobragade, Shri Justice Mahendra Wadhumal Chandwani, Shri Justice Abhay Sopanrao Waghwase, Shri Justice Ravindra Madhusudan Joshi, Shri Justice Santosh Govindrao Chapalgaonkar, Shri Justice Milind Manohar Sathaye, and Dr (Smt) Justice Neela Kedar Gokhale. In a separate resolution, the Collegium recommended the 7 additional judges to be made Permanent Judges of the Bombay High Court. The recommendation for a fresh one-year term as Additional Judges was made for Shri Justice Sanjay Anandrao Deshmukh and Smt. Justice Vrushali Vijay Joshi. The recommendation comes after a thorough evaluation process that involved assessments of judgments, consultations with colleagues familiar with the Bombay High Court, and scrutiny of various factors to ensure the suitability of the judges for permanent appointments. The Chief Ministers and Governors of the States of Maharashtra and Goa have concurred with the Collegium’s recommendation for the appointment of the Additional Judges as Permanent Judges and for the extension of term for the other two judges. This recommendation aims to address the vacancies in the Bombay High Court and strengthen the legal system in one of India’s important legal jurisdictions.
