The Supreme Court Registry, on Wednesday (May 29), refused to list the plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking a 7-day extension of his interim bail in the Liquor Policy Case. The refusal was based on the fact that Kejriwal was given the liberty to approach the trial court for regular bail, making the present application not maintainable. Additionally, since the judgment on the challenge to the arrest is already reserved, the extension application was deemed to have no correlation to the main petition.
The bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta granted interim release to Kejriwal on May 10, allowing him to be out of judicial custody till June 1. The extension plea was filed by Kejriwal citing the need for diagnostic tests and investigations, including a PET-CT Scan, and requested a 7-day relief period. Senior Advocate AM Singhvi brought up Kejriwal’s application before a bench, which directed the memo to be listed before the Chief Justice of India for an appropriate order.
In his plea, Kejriwal mentioned that his health condition might be partially attributed to the negligent behavior of jail authorities and emphasized the urgency of the medical tests. He stated that the last phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections coincided with the expiry of his interim bail on June 1. Despite the refusal to list the application, Kejriwal remains committed to undergoing the necessary medical examinations and has sought an extension to surrender on June 9.
