In a tragic incident, four Indian medical students studying at Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod city drowned in a river near St. Petersburg in Russia. The students, identified as Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub, were aged 18-20. They were taking a walk along the Volkhov river in Veliky Novgorod when the unfortunate incident occurred. Another student, Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, also fell into the river but was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The tragedy unfolded when a female Indian student waded out from the beach into the river and got into trouble, prompting her companions to try and save her. In the rescue attempt, three other students lost their lives. Efforts are underway to bring the bodies back to India, with the Indian Embassy in Russia and the Consulate in St. Petersburg working closely with local authorities for the repatriation process.
The Indian students were pursuing medical education in Russia, a country known for its excellence in medical education at a more affordable cost compared to private Indian colleges. Russian medical degrees are recognized globally, allowing graduates to practice medicine in various countries after passing licensing exams. The unfortunate incident has brought deep sorrow to the bereaved families, but they have been assured of all possible help and support during this difficult time.
