In a heartbreaking incident, senior IPS officer Shiladitya Chetia, who served as the Secretary of the home and political department in the Assam government, tragically took his own life just minutes after his wife passed away due to cancer. Shiladitya Chetia’s wife had been undergoing treatment for terminal brain cancer at Guwahati’s Nemcare Super Specialty Hospital for the past four months.
According to hospital authorities, Chetia shot himself in the back of his head with his service pistol around 4.32 pm, shortly after his wife’s passing at around 4.24 pm. The couple, who had no children, had been together at the hospital during the challenging period of her illness.
A 2009 batch IPS officer, Chetia had previously served in various capacities, including as Superintendent of Police in Golaghat, Barpeta, and Sonitpur districts. Expressing his condolences, Assam DGP G.P. Singh shared his deep grief over the tragic incident, highlighting the loss suffered by the entire Assam Police family.
