The residents of Guwahati, Assam, were struck with grief as the body of an 8-year-old boy, Abhinash, who fell into a stormwater drain and was swept away three days ago, was discovered on Sunday. The parents, Hiralal and his wife, identified the body at Guwahati Medical College after a massive search operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Abhinash was riding home on his father’s scooter during heavy rain when he slipped and was carried away by the current. The parents had held onto hope, staying at the search location, until the tragic discovery. The search effort, which included sniffer dogs, excavators, and various equipment, culminated in the recovery of the boy’s body in Rajgarh area, over four km from where he fell into the drain.
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed deep condolences for the family’s loss and thanked the rescuers, emphasizing the tireless efforts put forth in the search and rescue operations. Despite the devastating outcome, Sarma assured support for the family, especially the boy’s younger brother. The Chief Minister dismissed allegations of government negligence, recognizing the challenges faced in urban areas like Guwahati and pledging to address any identified issues. He is set to visit the family to provide his condolences and ensure the welfare of those left behind. The entire incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the need for preparedness in the face of tragedy.
