In a recent development in Pune, a trainee IAS officer, Puja Khedkar from the 2023 batch, faced repercussions for her alleged misconduct and unreasonable demands while on probation. Khedkar, the daughter of a retired IAS officer, made unconventional requests, including a car with a VIP number plate and an official chamber with staff. Her actions led to her transfer to Washim as a supernumerary assistant collector by the Maharashtra government.
The issue gained attention after Pune district collector Suhas Diwase raised concerns about Khedkar’s behavior in a letter to the state chief secretary Nitin Kareer. The letter detailed instances where Khedkar tried to set up her office in an unauthorized space and intimidated district staff. Moreover, she reportedly installed an amber light on her car, demanding privileges beyond her probationary status.
The conduct of Khedkar has sparked criticism from experienced bureaucrats, who highlighted that trainee officers are meant to learn on the job and not make extravagant demands. Former officers emphasized the importance of remaining grounded and focused on gaining experience during the probation period.
The controversy surrounding Khedkar sheds light on the expectations and conduct of trainee civil servants within the administrative system. It serves as a reminder of the values of humility and dedication that are integral to the civil services. The incident underscores the need for accountability and professionalism among future bureaucrats to uphold the integrity of the civil services in India.
