Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy, amidst strained bilateral ties. Trudeau expressed a commitment to working together to tackle important issues post the meeting with Modi.
The meeting comes after Trudeau accused Indian government involvement in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim strongly rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as ‘absurd and motivated’. Trudeau refrained from delving into specifics of the sensitive issue but emphasized the commitment to collaborating on crucial matters moving forward.
This encounter marks the first meeting between the two leaders since the G20 summit last year. Following a brief discussion, Trudeau congratulated Modi on his re-election as Prime Minister. Notably, this was Modi’s first foreign trip after re-assuming office for a historic third term.
The tensions between Canada and India stem from Canada’s alleged support for pro-Khalistani elements operating from its soil, a concern repeatedly raised by India. The murder of Nijjar, currently under RCMP investigation with four Indian nationals arrested, has further exacerbated the diplomatic strain.
Trudeau’s commitment to fostering a working relationship with Modi is significant in the backdrop of existing bilateral challenges. The leaders’ discussions on the sidelines of the summit, along with gestures like congratulating Modi, signify an effort towards diplomatic engagement and dialogue. The future interactions between Canada and India will be closely monitored to see how both nations address and navigate their differences amidst a backdrop of shared international commitments and responsibilities.
