West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has issued a notice to Kolkata Police personnel stationed at the Raj Bhavan to vacate the premises, as per sources from Raj Bhavan. This directive comes in the wake of an incident where Kolkata police personnel prevented victims of post-poll violence from meeting the governor to discuss their grievances. The Governor felt that the police were not following his orders and did not feel secure around them.
In response to this, the Governor is reportedly planning to transform the police outpost near the North Gate of the Raj Bhavan into a public platform known as ‘Jan Manch’. The move to ask the police to vacate the premises followed an incident where senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and victims of post-poll violence were stopped from entering the Raj Bhavan despite having written permission. They were prevented from entering citing Section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure), which restricts large gatherings.
Following this incident, Adhikari and another individual approached the Calcutta High Court, questioning the grounds on which they were denied entry, even with official permission. The High Court allowed Adhikari to visit the Raj Bhavan with the victims of post-poll violence upon receiving clearance from the governor’s office. The situation has attracted attention and scrutiny amidst allegations of post-poll violence in the state.
