In a shocking incident in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district, a 38-year-old woman, who fell in love with another man, was flogged by a Trinamool Congress functionary in public. The woman, who is now sequestered in Uttar Dinajpur, spoke to The Indian Express about the ordeal. She revealed that five years ago, she fell in love with another man and eventually left her husband to live with him. The incident, caught on video, went viral, leading to widespread outrage and the arrest of the main accused, TMC’s Tajimul Islam alias JCB.

The woman, while talking to The Indian Express, expressed her desire to live life on her own terms, despite facing humiliation and violence for falling in love. She mentioned that the incident wouldn’t have made it outside the village if the video hadn’t gone viral. The assault, led by Islam, took place during a ‘salishi sabha’ or kangaroo court, where the couple was flogged in public as a punishment for their relationship. The incident has sparked political tensions in the state, leading to increased police patrolling in rural areas.

The woman, who is now living with her new partner, emphasized that she is determined to move forward and live her life the way she chooses. Following the incident, police have booked Islam under various charges including molestation and assault. The area has witnessed another similar incident where a woman died by suicide after being flogged by people over an alleged extramarital affair. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with BJP staging protests and calling for CM Mamata Banerjee’s resignation over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
