Widespread Power Outage Grips Delhi Due to UP Substation Glitch
Delhi, the national capital of India, faced a major crisis on Tuesday afternoon as several areas experienced massive power cuts for nearly 1.5 to 2 hours. The disruption was caused by a technical snag at a substation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) in Uttar Pradesh.
According to reports, regions such as East, Southeast, and Central Delhi, including essential facilities like water treatment plants, were severely impacted by the power outage. Some of the affected areas included ITO, Laxmi Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Jamia, Narela, Model Town, Rohini, Gopalpur, Sabzi Mandi, Wazirpur, and Kashmiri Gate.
Delhi Power Minister Atishi addressed the issue during a press conference, stating that the restoration process had commenced, and electricity was gradually being restored to different parts of the city. She expressed concern over the national power grid’s failure and announced plans to meet with Union power officials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
While Atishi attributed the power cut to a fire at the Mandola substation in UP, UP Government officials refuted the claim, stating that it was a spark in one of their isolators that caused the disruption in electricity supply. They assured that the electricity supply had been restored, with around 1400 MW being supplied to Delhi from the Mandola substation in Ghaziabad.
Despite the restoration of power, social media was abuzz with complaints from residents about the prolonged outage, highlighting the challenges faced during the scorching heatwave in the city. The incident shed light on the vulnerabilities in the power infrastructure and the need for robust measures to prevent such disruptions in the future.
As the city battles the twin challenges of extreme heatwave and water shortage, the power outage added to the woes of the residents. The incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities to address the underlying issues and strengthen the power distribution system to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the national capital.
