Will PM Modi Attend G7 Summit in Canada in 2025? Canadian PM Trudeau Responds

In a recent statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will be hosting the next year’s G7 Summit in Alberta’s Kananaskis in 2025. This announcement came after the conclusion of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Italy’s Apulia region, where India was invited as an ‘Outreach Country.’ Interestingly, during the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had bilateral meetings with world leaders such as UK’s Rishi Sunak, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Modi also briefly interacted with Canadian PM Trudeau, sparking speculations on whether he would be invited to the G7 Summit in 2025.

Trudeau, when asked about inviting PM Modi for the upcoming G7 Summit, responded by appreciating the interest of Canadians in the event. However, he clarified that Italy is the current President of G7, and more details about the summit will be shared once Canada assumes the presidency. The Canadian PM emphasized his excitement in working with various G7 partners on a wide range of issues discussed during the summit in Italy. While India and Canada have faced diplomatic tensions in the past, the G7 Summit provided an opportunity for both leaders to engage in discussions and interactions.

The strained relations between India and Canada stemmed from Trudeau’s claims at the Canadian parliament regarding allegations of Indian agents’ involvement in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. Despite India’s protests and calls for evidence to substantiate the accusations, Trudeau has not provided any proof to date. India has consistently advocated against pro-Khalistani elements finding shelter in Canada, highlighting the need for cooperation in addressing such challenges. As the G7 Summit shifts its focus to Canada in 2025, the potential invitation of PM Modi remains a topic of interest, reflecting the evolving dynamics of international relations.
