The Congress in India has seen an increase in its strength in the Legislative Assembly, with 70 MLAs currently on board, showcasing a growing political force. So far, five Bharatiya Rashtravadi Samavadi (BRS) MLAs have joined the Congress, contributing to this rise in numbers. Additionally, with another 15 potential BRS MLAs expected to make the switch to Congress, the opposition BRS party has seen a reduction in its Assembly tally from 39 to 33.
The Congress is strategically eyeing a two-thirds majority in the Assembly, a target that requires a total of 80 MLAs. With the current count reaching 70, the party is in pursuit of attracting 10 more MLAs to secure the desired majority. The buzz around the political circles indicates that negotiations are ongoing with several BRS MLAs, with optimistic prospects of them joining the Congress by the second week of July.
The upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly in July is poised to be a significant juncture, with the Congress government aiming for the merger of the BRS Legislative Party (BRSLP) with the Congress Legislative Party. Another potential scenario being considered is the recognition of defected BRS MLAs as a separate group in the Assembly, akin to the model followed by Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra.
Looking back at the shifting dynamics, the BRS, which previously held a significant 103 MLA count in the Assembly, has witnessed a decline to 39 MLAs post the 2023 Assembly polls. The recent unfortunate demise of BRS Secunderabad Cantonment MLA Lasya Nanditha further reduced the party’s strength to 38. Notably, pre-Lok Sabha polls, several key BRS MLAs, including Kadiam Srihari, Danam Nagender, and Tellam Venkat Rao, opted to join the Congress, leading to a gradual decrease in the BRS numbers.
With the ruling party aiming for a strengthened position in the Assembly, the upcoming political landscape holds crucial developments that could impact the legislative dynamics in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on the evolving political scenario in the Indian Assembly.
