Delhi experienced a drop in maximum temperature below 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with no respite from the heat due to high humidity levels making outdoor conditions unbearable. The mercury stood at 39.7°C, three degrees above normal and a decrease from the previous day’s 40.4°C, with a heat index of 52°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi, predicting rain over the next six days.
According to IMD forecasts, Delhi is expected to see light rain until the end of the month, with an increase in rain intensity from June 28 onwards. The monsoon’s advancement into northwest India is also anticipated in the coming days, providing relief from the scorching temperatures. The city’s relative humidity fluctuated between 48% and 92% on Tuesday, making it challenging to sweat and cool the body effectively.
Furthermore, wet bulb temperatures, which determine the ease of being outdoors, were marginally lower than the previous day. As Delhi continues to battle the heat, the minimum temperature also saw a decrease to 28.6°C, offering some respite from the oppressive weather. IMD’s predictions suggest that maximum temperatures in Delhi will remain below 40°C for the remainder of the month, with a gradual decrease expected towards the end of June.
In addition to the drop in maximum temperatures, IMD’s monsoon bulletin indicates favorable conditions for the monsoon’s advancement into several parts of northwest India. The city is likely to witness an increase in rainfall intensity, providing relief from the sweltering conditions that have persisted over the past few weeks. As Delhi gears up for the monsoon season, residents can expect cooler evenings and potentially better outdoor conditions in the days to come.
