The by-election in the Vikravandi assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu produced a resounding victory for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as their candidate Anniyur Siva emerged as the winner by a significant margin of 67,757 votes. The final results, declared on July 13, 2024, showed Mr. Siva securing a total of 1,24,053 votes, while his closest rival, C. Anbumani of the PMK, received 56,296 votes. The by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of DMK MLA N. Pugazhenthi earlier this year. Despite facing off against multiple candidates from different parties, including the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), the battle in Vikravandi was primarily between the DMK and the PMK.
From the very beginning of the vote-counting process, Mr. Siva established a commanding lead and maintained it throughout the 21 rounds of counting. His victory was met with jubilation from DMK cadres and supporters, with celebrations erupting in Vikravandi. The margin of victory not only solidifies the DMK’s hold over the constituency but also showcases the continued support and trust of the people in the party’s governance.
In his post-election statement, Mr. Siva expressed his commitment to the welfare of the people of Vikravandi, emphasizing that he will dedicate himself to serving their needs. The win in Vikravandi adds to the DMK’s winning streak since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and is seen as a significant achievement by Chief Minister MK Stalin. The bypoll results affirm the significance of the DMK in Tamil Nadu’s growth and development, signaling a positive outlook for the party as it gears up for future electoral battles.
