Amidst the ongoing water crisis in the national capital, Delhi Water Minister Atishi’s hunger strike came to an abrupt end after her health deteriorated, leading to her hospitalization. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh revealed that doctors insisted on Atishi’s hospitalization, emphasizing the potential peril her life was in if she continued the hunger strike. Atishi is currently admitted to the ICU, where a series of tests are being conducted to assess her condition, prompting the halt of the indefinite hunger strike. Singh also mentioned that he will be reaching out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to emphasize Delhi’s urgent need for its rightful share of water from Haryana.
The critical issue of water shortage in Delhi has been a pressing concern, with the dwindling shares of the Yamuna River from Haryana exacerbating the crisis. Over the last three weeks, Delhi had been facing a reduction of 100 MGD, significantly impacting the water supply. However, there has been a recent increase in the share, lessening the shortfall to 90 MGD. Atishi had initiated her hunger strike on June 21, demanding much-needed water supply for the national capital amidst the heightened crisis.
As Atishi’s health took a turn for the worse, with her blood sugar levels dropping drastically, she was rushed to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital for immediate medical attention. The AAP party highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasizing Atishi’s commitment to the cause despite her declining health. Dr. Suresh, the Medical Director at LNJP Hospital, emphasized the critical health indicators that prompted Atishi’s admission to the ICU, underlining the necessity of medical intervention during such dire circumstances.
The water scarcity issue in Delhi has been a recurrent challenge, further exacerbated by the ongoing standoff with Haryana over the water supply shares. Atishi’s hunger strike, although noble in its intent, underscores the urgency of addressing the water crisis and ensuring sustainable solutions for the residents of Delhi. With the AAP MP’s efforts to engage with the central government and escalate the issue to a national platform, the spotlight is once again on the looming water crisis that demands immediate attention and resolution.
