The International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June annually. The day is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of people through yoga. Every year, International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga, emphasizing the union of mind and body, thoughts and actions, and harmony with nature. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Yoga Day, with a grand celebration planned on Friday, 21 June 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the event in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, overlooking the serene Dal Lake, expecting thousands of participants.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 is ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ focusing on the dual benefits of yoga practice in enhancing personal well-being and contributing to societal well-being. Established by the United Nations in 2014, the International Day of Yoga highlights the importance of yoga as a holistic approach to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Prime Minister Modi’s initiative at the 69th session of the General Assembly led to the official recognition of June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, supported by 175 member states.

Yoga is not merely physical exercise but a means to unite the mind, body, and spirit, promoting self-awareness and mindfulness. The practice of yoga has shown positive effects on stress reduction, flexibility, strength, and mental clarity. The International Yoga Day celebrations include various events, sessions, and activities globally, encouraging individuals of all ages and backgrounds to embrace the transformative potential of yoga. It is a day dedicated to spreading awareness about the holistic benefits of yoga and promoting a healthier lifestyle.

From its ancient roots in India to its global significance today, yoga continues to be a powerful tool for improving overall well-being. As the International Yoga Day approaches, the emphasis on ‘Yoga for Self and Society’ resonates with the essence of yoga, emphasizing the balance it creates within individuals and its positive impact on society.
