Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mumbai, Maharashtra on Saturday, July 13, to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of developmental projects worth ₹29,400 crore. The event took place at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, where Modi launched projects related to transportation connectivity in Mumbai, including railways, roads, and ports development. One of the major highlights of the visit was the launch of the Thane-Borivali Tunnel Project, valued at ₹16,600 crore. This tunnel will create a direct connection between Western Express Highway at Borivali and Ghodbunder Road in Thane, reducing travel time and congestion.
Additionally, Modi inaugurated the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, which is aimed at connecting Western Express Highway at Goregaon to Eastern Express Highway at Mulund. This project is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity in the region. The Prime Minister also initiated the Kalyan Yard remodelling project and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal in Navi Mumbai, which will enhance operational efficiency and create job opportunities.
Furthermore, Modi dedicated new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extended platforms 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The extension of these platforms will allow for the operation of longer trains, increasing ridership and improving station capacity. The Prime Minister also launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a skill enhancement program aimed at addressing youth unemployment and providing industry exposure for young individuals.
The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project is expected to be one of India’s longest and largest urban tunnels, with an administrative cost of over ₹16,600 crore. The tunnel will feature new lanes, cross passages, and safety measures to ensure a smooth and safe commute for passengers. Additionally, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and decongest traffic in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
