The Supreme Court of India has taken a stern stance on the ongoing water crisis in Delhi, specifically focusing on the issue of water tanker mafias who are suspected of diverting water meant to address the scarcity. In a recent hearing, a Vacation Bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale expressed concern over reports of water wastage and diversion, highlighting the need for immediate action.
The Court noted that despite water being sent from Himachal Pradesh to Delhi, there were apparent discrepancies in the delivery of the supply to the designated channels. This led to suspicions of the involvement of water tanker mafias, a recurring problem that intensifies during the summer season. The Justices emphasized the gravity of the situation, warning the Delhi government that failure to address the issue could prompt intervention from the Delhi Police.
Senior Counsel Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi and advocate Shadan Farasat, representing the Delhi government, assured the Court that steps were being taken to combat water diversion. They mentioned measures such as disconnection of water supplies to prevent excess wastage. Nevertheless, the Court requested a detailed report from the Delhi government outlining the actions taken to prevent water loss.
The Court’s directive underscored the urgency of the situation, particularly as Delhi sought additional water from Himachal Pradesh as an emergency measure to combat the heatwave. The Supreme Court’s intervention follows previous orders to convene stakeholders, including the Upper Yamuna River Board, to address Delhi’s water requirements.
As the case progresses, the Court’s scrutiny of the water crisis and the role of tanker mafias remains a focal point. The Delhi government’s response and actions against water diversion will be closely monitored by the Court to ensure the effective management of water resources during the challenging period.
