The state of Odisha witnessed a significant development as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi allocated portfolios to his council of ministers. In a recent order issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister decided to retain home, finance, and several other departments for himself. Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo was assigned the Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment and Energy departments, while Pravati Parida, the lone female minister in the 16-member council, was given the Women and Child Development, Mission Shakti, and Tourism departments.

Mr. Majhi, the first BJP Chief Minister of the state, took office on Wednesday. In addition to the aforementioned departments, he also holds the general administration, public grievances, information, public relations, water resources, and planning and convergence portfolios. Suresh Pujari was entrusted with Revenue and Disaster Management, Rabi Narayan Naik with Rural Development, Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water, and Nityananda Gond with school and mass education among other departments.

The cabinet also saw the allocation of health and family welfare, parliamentary affairs, electronics & Information Technology to Mukesh Mahaling, and food supplies & consumer welfare, science, and technology to Krushna Chandra Patra. Moreover, Prithiviraj Harichandan received portfolios like law, works, and excise, while Bibhuti Bhusan Jena got commerce, transport, steel, and mines. Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra was assigned housing & urban development and public enterprise departments. The ministers of state (Independent Charge) were also given their respective responsibilities, such as forest, environment, and climate change, and labour & employees’ state insurance among others.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new council of ministers witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. The event marked a historical moment for Odisha as the first BJP government was formed in the state, led by Chief Minister Majhi and his deputies. The inclusion of experienced leaders like Pravati Parida as the first female deputy chief minister reflects a new era for Odisha’s governance.
